William P. Gottlieb’s photos are some of the most famous jazz photos in history. Gottlieb captured the energy of the D.C. and New York jazz scenes from 1938 to 1948.
A jazz journalist and a self-taught photographer, Gottlieb photographed Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more.
